This is the one issue that has been bothering us the most for the past couple of years when we look at our impact on the environment. You're probably aware of the issues around takeaway coffee cups, they've been in the press a lot over the past couple of years. Here are a few key points:
In the UK, we are using and binning 2.5 billion single-use cups every year.
Less than 0.25% of those are recycled. That's around 1 in every 400.
Every day, half a million of them become street litter.
The vast majority go to landfill and could take centuries to degrade.
Sobering isn't it? - we've only ever used compostable cups at Foundry but even those aren't much better for the planet as they are rarely disposed of correctly, i.e. in the right types of facilities. Friends of the Earth have a nice, short blog post about all the main issues relating to single-use cups. You can read it here if you are interested.
It's pretty clear that this is a big problem for us in society as a whole and for a small business like ours, it's getting harder and harder to live with - knowing that we're actually contributing to the problem by selling you coffee in a takeaway cup.
The solution? - well, we've tried a few things. Discounts for those people using their own cups made some people happy but accounted for less than 5% of our takeaway sales so, in reality, the impact was way too small.
We've considered charging for takeaway cups but decided that this would not only be really unpopular, it also wouldn't actually address the issue. We'd still be adding to the cup mountain, but also annoying our customers at the same time.
In the end, the solution is pretty obvious - and also difficult. We need to stop selling coffee in these types of cups. It's the only way to make a difference so that's what we have decided to do, from now.
We've been planning this for a while and we wanted to make sure that we had good options available to you as far as reusable cups go and now we've got that bit covered. So, what are your options?
take a bit of time out of your day and sit down, enjoy your coffee and have a think about how awesome you are for not adding another cup to the cup mountain!
sometimes you don't have time for that, right? Bring your reusable cup and then walk away thinking about how awesome you are for not adding another cup to the cup mountain!
buy one of our cups. We have rCups available at our coffee shop and we'll fill it for free the first time. That's our way of letting you know how awesome you are for not adding another cup to the cup mountain!
you can buy the rCup or one of our other reusable cups online (click here to see them all). Use the code COLLECT if you want to pick it up from our coffee shop, where we'll fill it for free for you.
We're very aware that this is a big change for some of our customers and we're all hoping that you will support us in what we are trying to do so thank you in anticipation!
