It's always a pleasure to feature a coffee from Rwanda and this one is a real beauty. The standout feauture is the luxurious, creamy body which carries smooth butterscoth sweetness alongside plummy notes. The whole thing melts away in a dreamy dark choclate finish. This is seriously satisfying coffee, however you brew it.

Origin:  Rulindo District, Northern Province.

More info about this washing station:

Rwanda is blessed with ideal coffee growing conditions that include high altitude, regular rainfall, volcanic soils with good organic structure and an abundance of Bourbon. The vast majority of Rwandan coffee is produced by smallholders of which there are thought to be around half a million with parcels of land often not much larger than just one hectare per family. Coffee is grown in most parts of the country, with particularly large concentrations along Lake Kivu and in the southern province. Rwandan smallholders organise themselves into cooperatives and share the services of centralised wet-mills – or washing stations as they are known locally.

The station was initially built in 2006 by the Iyongera Musaruro Co-operative who began working with Falcon's sister company RTC in 2014, to help with financial management and production oversight to improve all aspects of the station. The co-op has approximately 500 members and receives cherry from 800 farmers in total from the surrounding area.

During the harvest process, cherry is delivered to the station where it is pulped using a 3 disc Mckinnon pulper before undergoing fermentation in tanks for 12 - 18 hours. After this, the coffee is density sorted in the water grading channels before being dried on one of the 42 raised African beds.

Big hitter for me...

This is just a really *nice* coffee - slightly complex, big on the sweetness and lovely and fruity if you get it right. Currently got this on rotation with the ever present Rocko, but finding myself looking forward to this coming around. Enjoying this coffee as espresso and pour over, and also in milk. I would agree with the previous reviewer that its quite a 'comfort' coffee, but that doesn't mean its boring, far from it. Must admit to not knowing a lot about Rwandan coffee prior to this, but will happily be coming back for more!

Thanks Paul, what a great review! - we really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with us all. :)
Dependable without being boring

A good example of a "comfort coffee" I think. It was very popular as a cappuccino providing smooth milk chocolate notes. As a filter, you get a great balanced but slightly sweet very drinkable coffee. Dialling it in for espresso I'm getting a sweet and slightly fruity drink, using 16.5 g in a longer 40 g shot with 5-6 seconds of pre-infusion over about 25 seconds in total.

That's a great review Paul, thank you so much! - couldn't agree more with your thoughts, spot on :)

Or you could try......
