Oh my, you're going to love this organic certified coffee. Guatemala has been thrilling us now for a good few years and this beauty is up there with the very best. Expect a huge mouthful of tropical fruit, sparkling acidity and just a hint of rhubarb tartness thrown in too. We're talking about incredible complexity and great balance, just wonderful coffee.
Origin: San Antonio Huista, Huehuetenango.
Varietal: Pache, Bourbon, Caturra.
Processing: Washed and sun-dried.
This coffee has a great story too..........
The Red de Mujeres, or 'network of women', is a large group of female coffee producers covering five different areas of Huehuetenango. The group is made up of 830 women, but this particular lot comes from the San Antonio Huista area and is the product of 50 producers. Within the entire community of women there are 8 different Mayan languages spoken, highlighting the diversity of culture and language in this area of Guatemala.
All of these women have been either widowed during the 36 years of civil war in Guatemala, or were left when their husbands fled the country during the coffee crisis between 2001 and 2004. Since Huehuetenango was one of the areas hardest hit by the crisis, many people decided to give up altogether and find work elsewhere, leaving their families behind.
We were inspired when hearing about his story and hugely impressed by the way that these women have organised themselves in such tough circumstances. Most remarkable of all is the incredible quality that this group have managed to achieve in their coffee in a relatively short time - we're incredibly excited to see how this develops over the next few years.
This is stunning coffee - wow! I love trying different beans from Foundry, but it’s going to be a while before I’m tempted away from this beauty! It’s soared straight to the top of my list of all-time favourites. Clean and fresh but exciting and complex at the same time. OK, I’ll leave the detailed description to the experts and just say it’s delicious and not to be missed. Thank you!
