Susana Hurtado Inga - Peru

Well, coffee from Peru is certainly on the up! - recent changes to how coffee is bought from the farmer in this country have led to quality being incentivised and the results of these changes are plain to see. This lot is a beautiful example. 

In the cup, you can expect a super clean coffee with delicious mango and subtle strawberry notes. The acidity is just right, a little fizzy but not overpowering and reminds us of pomegranate. An unusual buttery body gives the coffee an overall smoothness and balance that makes this coffee really easy to drink all day.

Susana Hurtado Inga is a coffee producer who lives in the el Diamante village in San Jose de Lourdes. Susana owns around 1.5 hectares of land which is planted with caturra variety and is planted at a density of 4000 plants per hectare. The altitude at the farm ranges from 1800 to 1900masl and the coffee grows under shade from banana and some native fruit trees.

San Jose de Lourdes San Jose de Lourdes has a very distinct climate, compared to the other districts, it is much cooler and has higher rainfall, which contributes to a unique cup profile with lots of citrus and a rare buttery characteristic. Even though there is a lot of potential for quality, San Jose de Lourdes is very isolated, since it is far from the city of Jaen and requires a river crossing in a boat since there are no bridges.

Susana picks all her coffee herself and with the help of her family, who also own coffee farms in the area. Since Susana doesn’t have adequate space or infrastructure to dry her coffee she drys the parchment at a neighbour’s farm, Roger Chilcon Flores, who receives the parchment at around 40% and then dries it down to the desired 11% before delivering the coffee to the warehouse in Jaen.

So much going on in the cup

This coffee was absolutely beautiful, smooth and rounded in the cup. On drinking, such lovely fruity notes and floral flavours it was a disappointment to finish!

Beautiful coffee with a fabulous story

This is a delicious coffee - fresh, clean and lively on the palate. I’m happy to support small growers with a story, and this bean has a good story. Definitely going to order more of this beauty. Brilliantly roasted, as ever.

Surprisingly great

I'm a fan of Ethiopian coffees, so don't usually get anything from Peru, but have to say this one is an absolute belter. Give it go!

Another amazing coffee

Just don't get a bad coffee from this place. This is another week balanced flavoursome coffee

Great results from Aeropress

Nice and fruity with strong strawberry notes.

I've been grinding to 25 on the Comandante and using Aeropress (inverted) as I would a French Press;
- 15G Coffee in
- 250G water straight off the boil
- Steep for 4 minutes
- Break and stir the crust
- Steep for a further 4 mins before plunging
