'We're loving this coffee in the 'comfort' hopper in the coffee shop' - absolutely fabulous espresso, a real people pleaser'

Rwandan coffee often comes with a distinctive 'earthiness'. This lot though, is quite different. It's a new washing station for us and the coffee is clean and well processed, which shows as soon as we take a sip.

When we drink this coffee, we are reminded of redcurrants, marmalade and toffee. It's a smooth and subtly fruity lot but with a bit of a bite and a gentle, slightly tart acidity.

Great as an all day filter, but we think this coffee really shines as espresso. Fairly traditional in the best way, really well balanced, and works great when milk is added too. A true all-rounder.

Taste and flavour perception are complex and difficult to articulate. We love sharing our tasting notes with you, but please don't rely too heavily on our reports. Your experience is what matters most and it may be different. We've written about that whole issue here.

Tumba coffee washing station is located in the northern province of Rwanda, a region known for producing some of the finest coffee in the country.

Tumba was established in 2007 by 3 private investors, and is now owned by Venuste Mugiraneza, the only founding member who was a local inhabitant. A former teacher, Venuste is very passionate about coffee and has developed his experience and expertise over the past 10 years. As a local resident, he is also aware of many hurdles coffee farmers can face, so he has been investing in farmer extension services. He works tirelessly to keep the station in a good condition so to continue to deliver perfect quality and support the farmers he works with.
