Well, for us anyway.
We've deleted our Facebook account and this post is to let you know why we took this step and what we are planning on doing instead.
We joined the #stophateforprofit campaign at the beginning of July, which involved us suspending all our advertising on Facebook. The hope was that this would encourage Facebook to do more to stop the spread of racism and hate on their platform.
We've been digging into this issue and we've come to the sad realisation that the platform largely benefits from the promotion of hate and division and the maintenance of a toxic environment (which leads to more 'engaged' users and therefore a more attractive proposition to advertisers).
We've become increasingly concerned and uncomfortable about these issues and there is very little indication that things will change for the better.
We're out, we don't want to be a part of it.
There came a point where we realised that we are part of the problem. Our money is funding this. We've tried to do something to help, but we have very little power - but we can stop using the platform and we can stop giving Facebook money.
What are we going to do instead?
Whilst it's true that we are making some changes to how we relate to all you lovely people - a lot of stuff is staying the same. You can still call us or send a WhatsApp message, you can still email - and you can get in touch with us anytime using the chat facility on our website. None of that is changing. We'll be more accessible than ever.
As far as social media goes, we're going to continue with Instagram for now - but we're keeping that under review too and we won't be advertising on this Facebook-owned platform anymore either.
We have a few new things happening too:
We'll be posting informative and fun stuff more regularly on our blog and we've created another blog that includes short posts which are just about the day to day stuff - the kind of thing we would have previously posted on Facebook. The idea is that we (or you) don't have to be on social media at all to get a good idea of what we're are up to.
We'll also be sending out emails to anyone who subscribes to our email list and increasing the frequency from once a month to once every couple of weeks. This is by far the best way to be the first to hear about exclusive offers, new coffee arrivals and anything else that's new or exciting. You can sign up here if you haven't already. You'll also get 20% off your next order of beans if you do!
This is an exciting time for us as we reclaim some energy and really focus on engaging with you all more meaningfully. Thanks for reading,
Team Foundry.
